Chapter Fifteen
Alistair
I knew what was happening. I could read the writing on the wall. Iâd been dumped before, after all, and as much as it sucked to admit, Finn wasnât the first guy to do it by ghosting me. In the past though, thereâd been an inkling that something was wrong. That the guy Iâd been with was losing interest. With Finn, his withdrawal had come out of nowhere. Everything had been good, and then it wasnât.
Not that he ignored me entirely. In the first few days after heâd canceled coming to spend the weekend while his son was at his grandparents, the texts had slowed and the phone calls had stopped. Iâd asked if everything was okay, if something was wrong. But heâd assured me he was just busy with work.
At the time, I thought maybe heâd been telling the truth. After all, just the week before, heâd been amazing. Heâd helped me and Grier and Jett clean up after the break in, repaired any damage to the houseâthough, I guessed that was his jobâbut heâd helped us deal with insurance.
Thereâd been nothing to hint that just a few days later weâd be almost no contact, and heâd be leaving my texts unread. So, I stopped sending them altogetherâI had some pride left, after all. Of course, if I were entirely honest, Iâd hoped he notice my silence and it would spur him into responding. That everything would go back to normal.
It didnât, and as the days crept closer to the weekend, his son would be with his grandparents and we normally would have planned to spend the weekend together, I waited for him to reach out all the while fighting the urge to send him just one last text asking if we would see each other.
I held out and didnât send the text, and he never reached out.
So, that was how I wound up alone on Friday night, curled up on my bed, silent phone on the pillow next to my head, the kitten snuggled in beside me. I refused to let myself cry, but I couldnât get rid of the ache gripping my throat or the hot stinging behind my eyes.
A light knock at my closed door made me want to curl deeper into my bed, pull the covers over my head, and disappear. I knew it would be Grier. While neither he nor Jett had asked outright about Finnâsomething I deeply appreciatedâIâd caught them exchanging meaningful glances when they didnât think I was looking. More than once, Grier opened his mouth like he wanted to say something, his pained expression a dead giveaway for what he wanted to talk about. But by some miracle, he kept his mouth shut and his thoughts to himself.
Not that Grier was an I-told-you-so kind of guy, but it sucked to have to admit just how wrong youâd been about someone.
âYeah,â I said, sitting up.
The door flung open and Jett practically tackled me back onto my bed, wrapping me in a bear hug and pinning my arms to my side.
